Hacker Frees Up Palm Pre From Carrier Bonds
After iPhone’s Jailbreak, it has become a popular phenomenon to unlock the phones to be used out of the contract. It was very much obvious for the Pre to get unlocked but it was not expected to be done too soon after the launch date.
It has however now been done. Steve Troughton-Smith, an Irish iPhone developer, who developed the “Lights Off” iPhone game, attending Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference purchased the Palm Pre and crafted his own way to use the phone in his country. Steve hacked the pre, bypassing the Sprint activation process. As reported, the process was not too complex with Palm’s Javascript based OS. He then did a few more tweaks to install sprint apps on the phone. Steve has now a pretty functional Palm pre with working wi-fi and applications. He is however unable to make calls or use a data plan. This too might get solved soon.
