iTunes Universal Payment System on Its Way?

Wall street journal reports a rumor that Apple has to launch a universal payment system via iTunes. This payment system will be a direct rival of eBay’s PayPall. Users will be able to make and receive payments via iTunes. Like purchasing online. These payments will not be restricted to iTunes music and apps but it will be internet-wide. It is not yet clear how will it exactly work but its gonna be something like (or better than) PayPall.

By the way, does this rumor make any sense? Has Apple any history of such services? Apple has always been focused to increase its hardware sales. iTunes app store is an example. Apple is good with its gadgets. In my opinion, there’s no chance of such service from Apple. This rumor is just to create some gossip.
