Breaking: iPhone 4 Does Free Video Calling Over Wi-Fi
Steve Jobs has just announced the iPhone 4 with iOS 4 and a lot of great features.
It was long rumored and then got confirmed that the iPhone 4 will have the video calling/chatting facility. Now we have it! Steve Jobs just announced this new feature at the WWDC ’10 keynote. But this is not the traditional video calling like the HTC EVO 4G which uses the 4G network to make video calls. Qik is providing the video chat app for EVO.
So what is iPhone 4′s video calling then? It is an ‘over-the-web’ video calling facility just like you do with the Skype. It doesn’t use your cellular data, instead requires you to have a wi-fi connection. Video calling facility is limited to iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only. So I guess, it is not much useful for many users. Most of the Apple guys have the iPhones already and it takes a long time for all of your friends and family to have the latest expensive gadgets available. I don’t like the idea! But Steve says: “It is wi-fi only in 2010, we’re working with the cellular providers to get things ready”. Nice! Are you listening MusceNerd? Can you hack iPhone 4 for us to make video calls over 3G?
Well, the video calling over the iPhone 4 is being called ‘FaceTime Video Calling’. Steve jobs demoed FaceTime by making a video call to Johnathan Ive during the keynote. It requires no set up! Another amazing thing is that you can switch between front and rear camera! Wow!
FaceTime is being released as open source! Surprise!
