Note: This guide is for iPhone 4 running iOS 3.1.3 to 4.0. If you are running an iOS version later than 4.0. This guide is not recommended for you, you’d rather have to hit one of the following links:

Well for others having iOS 3.1.3 upto 4.0 on their iPhone 4s, instructions are as follows. The credit for this unlock solution for iPhone 4 goes to iPhone Dev Team. Without engaging you in more details, I’d guide you through 10 steps to unlock your iPhone 4. It shouldn’t take you more than 5 minutes but make sure that you have iOS 3.1.3 up to 4.0.

Let’s start:

1. Connect your iPhone 4 to a wi-fi network. No 3G please.
2. Open the Safari browser on your iPhone 4.
3. Go to Jailbreakme.com and jailbreak your iPhone 4. Make sure you have the iPhone firmware 3.1.3 to 4.0. No less than 3.1.3, no 4.x.
4.  Now go to Settings>General>Network and turn off 3G.
5. Now that you have jailbroken, you have ‘cydia’ installed on your iPhone 4. Press the home button and find ‘cydia’ in your apps in the springboard.
6. In cydia go to search and type ‘ultrasn0w‘. If you are presented with version 1.0.1 or higher skip to step 10 below. If the ultrasn0w version is less than 1.0.1, follow all the steps below.
7. You can’t unlock your iPhone 4 with an ultrasn0w version less than 1.0.1. You’d then need to bring over 1.0.1. For that purpose, press the ‘Manage‘ button at the bottom, select Sources>Edit>add. Then type ‘repo666.ultrasn0w.com’ in the text field without qouts.
8. Reboot your iPhone 4.
9. Go to cydia again, search for ultrasn0w. It must be on version 1.0.1 or higher now.
10. Now press the install button to install ultrasn0w.
11. Your iPhone 4 is now unlocked! Cheers!

What should you do next?

Now that you have your iPhone 4 unlocked, upgrade it to iOS 4.3 without losing the unlock!

    Here in oz all iPhones are unlocked if brought from the apple store outright and locked from other cell phone shops but the providers must give you the unlock password and that is the law in Australia. Telstra unlocks at no charge and vodafone and optus charges to unlock.       hi Gareth There are a variety of reasons it might of happened …
      u just might need to respring the device .. or since untethered jailbreak is out for 4.2 u might as well backup ur phone / update it /jailbreak it /download ultrasnow/

      (to easily respring device add repository in cydia http://cydia.hackulo.us
      then search in cydia for SBSettings /install.. to open stroke time on top screen )

      Hi Sam just sync ur phone before (just in case although it does not normally affect anything on the phone)..
      just before u sync your device make sure that in itunes u have ticked the boxes relative to the things u might want to sync .. movies music ect …

      Hey Manoj… just open your itunes ..back up your data.. download and install latest software to phone…(if you had already a jailbroken phone and you dont want to lose some apps .. open itunes on left right click on iphone logo and tick transfer purchased apps)

      so the 4.2.1 has modem firmware 3.10.01 or 02.10.04. these cannot yet be unlocked. only the firmware 01.59.00 (that came with 4.1) can be unlocked via ultrasn0w. so if you updated to 4.2.1, you have to wait. if you have 4.1 and wanting to upgrade to 4.2.1, but still need unlock, then apparently there is a way to upgrade and still keep 01.59.00. unfortunately, those who have upgraded to the new firmware cannot downgrade. hope that helps.

      unfortunately although the unlock might work with some if it has been given to u with a contract it might be factory loked to 1 provider .. ultrasnow wont work .. yet to figure out how will keep u posted :)

      i have same firmware/baseband and version .. and it worked just fine but u might have some trouble if u received your phone with a contract by one service provider..

    Unlock will not work on your 4.1 basebands…to unlock you have to download latest REDSN0W and follow instructions..PRESS INSTALL IPAD BASEBAND AND CYDIA…now unlock should work through ultrasnow

    version 4.2 can be unlocked same way but the jailbreak is Tethered..which means you have to connect to computer everytime u want to reboot

    the Dev-Tam is relasing an Untethered jailbreak for the 4.2 or 4.2.1 this christmas eve…untethered means you can reboot from device no need to connect to comp..anyone who likes help add me on twitter… twitter.com\mrdabbas

    My dad the other day found an iphone4 in his taxi and then took it to the police station. they searched the phone and found it to be a spanish phone and they told us to keep it as the chances of finding the owner is next to none. So now i have the iphone and wondered if there is anything i can do in order to change the carrier which is currently movistar 8.0. I have downloaded cydia & ultrasnow and taken out the necessary steps to unlock the phone. I have also cut down a sim card to a micro sim to fiy the phone but still i have had no luck. Now i think i need to change the carrier of the phone in order for it to work, any suggestions on how to do so?

    yes you can use your current sim to new phone, in which, there is a tool kit out there to trim your regular sim to mini sim card.

      If you dont have tool kit, just measure the size of that slop and cut the plastic body of that sim to that size.. i did that and it worked perfectly.. thanks to this post.

      The answer is no. You would not be able to use your current sim card because the iphone 4 uses a mini sim. That is, unless your current car is a mini sim, in which case, I have no idea.

      jailbreakme works only till 4.0.1. If you have 4.0.2, use limera1n. simple and easy procedure.

      go to iclarified.com/unlock and follow the steps and pick the options (iphone4, os 4.0, baseband etc) – at the last step choose limera1n over jailbreakme (it will give you both options)

      If you have 4.1 or 4.2 – you just have to wait for the unlock – like the rest of us.
