Google Reinvents SERPs with Instant Previews for Mobile
Google has just released instant previews for mobile. Instant previews are the screenshots of the webpages that are shown on Google SERPs as a result of a search query. Google’s instant previews are great in many ways, they let you choose from the search results in an even better manner. Google decides which results to show but you choose which results you’d like to visit. With instant previews, you don’t only have the title and a little excerpt of the page but also a quick view. For most of the users this is very much helpful in finding the exact result they want. All this is awesome but instant previews for mobile are not just the screenshots of the webpages they are a lot more.
Once you search for something on your smartphone, you see a magnifying glass next to each search result but unlike the desktop version, this icon takes you to a new web page containing the screenshots of top search results. This is kind of an all new designed SERP. You can flick through the screenshots to view, find and choose the most relevant result you want. Each screenshot has a little text description as well so choosing the wanted result is not only easier but also a lot of fun. If a website has a mobile version, the screenshot displays the screenshot of the mobile site. See gggadgets.com’ example below:
I’d call Google’s instant previews for mobile as SERP 2.0 and foresee them becoming the default design of SERPs. If not, they’d atleast expand to smart TVs i.e Apple TV and Google TV as they are the most natural form of presenting search results on big screens. Aren’t they?
