Facebook Video Mockup. This is not the real thing
The above image is from Mashable’s Mockup of Facebook Video Chat.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told news outlets yesterday that Facebook has a “big” announcement coming next week. Today Mashable sources have confirmed that that service is a long-awaited feature for the social media giant. That feature will be a Skype-powered Video Chat. According to TechCrunch, Facebook’s Seattle team put this feature together and it will use a desktop component with an in-browser chat feature. Rumors of this feature were floating around as early as last year, and now it’s finally going to go live.
Google’s recent release of Google + in beta format also has a similar feature called “hangouts”, but Google + is currently limited in its release. Though they beat Facebook to video chat, they didn’t do it on a wide scale. Facebook’s partnership with Skype is no secret, as many Facebook features integrate with Skype. This move by both companies, though, could lead to increased usage of both services together. +1 to Facebook and Skype for bringing this feature to the masses. Now let’s hope it’s more popular than Facebook Groups.
