We have a little bit of rumor and a little bit of fact here today. Let’s start with what we know. The images you see here, courtesy of Android Police, and RootzWiki are the first shots we’ve seen of the new version of Android slated for this fall. In case you’ve missed it, this one is called Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), and this is Google’s answer to the fragmentation problem in the Android ecosystem. The new Android will work to combine both the tablet and smartphone OS into one package, making everything that works on one, work on the other as well. This was announced back at Google IO.
Some of the changes coming include a completely revamped notification bar, a new launcher and app drawer, a panorama mode for the camera, re-themed Gmail. It’s not a lot, but at least you have something to look forward to. As with most new things from Google, the Nexus brand of phones will get it first. The upcoming Nexus Prime will be the first in line, followed by the Nexus S.
Now to what’s still rumor. The Korean publication, Electronic Times, is reporting that Samsung will be manufacturing the Nexus Prime. Reported specs thus far include a 1.5GHz dual core processor, and a 4.5-inch HD AMOLED screen. They’re also hinting at a mid-October release date. Much more on this exciting new device as we get it!
