The latest version of the Android market, 3.1.3 is now available for download (mirror). To update you will not need root access, but you will need to have “unknown sources” checked in your apps settings. If you’re not too concerned about getting up-to-date right away, you can wait for the update to push OTA to your device at some undetermined date. There are some really nice features in the update, though, which may prompt you to go ahead and get it. I installed it this morning with no trouble, and am really digging the new additions. So what changed with the update? There’s finally a +1 button on the mobile market, something that’s been on the browser version for some time. The settings menu has been revised, and there’s now a click-to-read explanation of app permissions. You’ll also see a new icon for your market. The best thing that comes with this update, though, is the PIN setting for purchases. This is something that should have been implemented a long time ago, in my opinion. You can now set a PIN for your market and in-app purchases. Anyone without it (read kids and strangers playing with your phone) can no longer make purchases through your device. +1 Google. +1.
