A questionable report from Digitimes citing “upstream supplier sources” is claiming that Apple will release not 1, but 2 new iPad models in 2012. This sounds to us a lot like the promises of two new iPhones this year, don’t you think? However, if this rumor is true we could see some interesting iPad variations next year with faster processors and longer battery life.
The report claims that an incremental update to the iPad 2, the iPad 2S, will feature only small update such as a more powerful processor (the fabled A6, most likely). The iPad 3, though, will supposedly launch in Q3 of 2012 just before the world ends. This model will also feature the quad core A6 and a 2048×1536 Retina Display.
Apple’s new generation iPad will enter mass production soon with the launch set for March 2012, according to sources from the upstream supply chain; however, the sources revealed that internally Apple does not view the new iPad product as iPad 3, but rather an upgraded iPad 2 and the real iPad 3 will not be launched until the third quarter of 2012 at the earliest.
Earlier this year you might recall the rumors of an Apple releasing an iPad 2 HD, which also turned out to be false. So, the lesson is not to get your hopes up. Naturally, as with all things Apple, no one will know the truth until it actually happens. Let the rumor mill begin.
