For a couple of weeks now, rumors of an unveiling of Samsung’s Galaxy S II successor, the Galaxy S III have been dominating the web. After what might have been the device showing up in small leaks, it was believed that Samsung would be bringing the GSIII to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Those rumors have proven to be false, however, as Samsung has made an official announcement about the new device that indicates a later release date. Samsung has confirmed that the S III will not be coming to MWC, but that they will be showing off some other new devices at the convention.
“Samsung is looking forward to introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012,”
As for the S III release, Samsung intends to hold a separate event for that device sometime in the first half of 2012. According to a spokesperson speaking with TechRadar, “The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product. Samsung stays committed to providing the best possible mobile experiences for customers around the world”. With the Galaxy S II still fairly fresh in the U.S. it’s not surprising to see it get a little more breathing room before the next big thing hits the market. It could be that Samsung is holding off for other reasons, though. Some web rumors have pointed to an iPhone 5 release in July, and Samsung may be trying to hold off on a launch until closer to that date, in order to try to pull customers away from Apple’s next smartphone.
Samsung and Apple have been embroiled in a legal battle for over a year, with points scored on both sides. Samsung has also been hitting back hard with advertising that’s distinctly anti-Apple, like the “you got Samsunged” commercial spots, and the Galaxy Tab advertisements that tout the device as “The Tablet Apple Tried to Stop“. Samsung will also air their first Super Bowl commercial for the upcoming AT&T Galaxy Note. If you needed even more reason to believe competition is heating up, it was reported by BGR that Samsung will be bringing a super tablet to market that will allegedly carry a Retina display, something Apple has always boasted in the iPad. This new display, though, is supposedly quite a step up from current Retina displays. That tablet, said to be an 11.6″ device, may debut at MWC in February.
Out of all of this rumor, one thing is certain. There are diehard fans on either side of the line, and neither of them seems to be giving any ground. Depending on what the next big devices from either company hold, though, it’s going to make for an interesting year in tech.
