Wireless customers looking to pick up the HTC One X or the Sprint Evo 4G LTE as their next upgrade may be disappointed. If you’re already in possession of a One X on AT&T you’re part of the fortunate crowd. For those who haven’t had the privilege yet, it looks like you could be waiting a while longer. HTC has, this morning, announced that incoming shipments of the HTC One X and Evo 4G LTE have been delayed in customs due to a patent dispute with, you guessed it, Apple. Shipments of the super-popular smart phone have been delayed “indefinitely” while HTC works with customs authorities to sort out the issue. Remember, indefinitely doesn’t mean forever. It just means they have no idea how long it will take.

“The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order,” an HTC spokesperson said. “We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval. The HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible.”

So what is it that HTC has apparently done? Back in 2011, an ITC (International Trade Commission) Judge ruled that HTC had violated an Apple patent for a UI function that allows a user to tap on a phone number displayed in an e-mail or webpage, and have that number link to the phone’s dialer. HTC began moving on the issue, creating a workaround solution that did not violate said patent. However, they didn’t move fast enough for the ITC. Current shipments are now being held until HTC can resolve the issue with customs. As a result, no further shipments of those devices can come into the country, meaning the May 18th release of the Evo 4G LTE will be delayed. As a result, Sprint has removed the device as “coming soon” on their site. The ban does not include refurbished devices, which can still be brought in to replace defective handsets.

Rumors are the stuff that gets our imagination flowing. Over here, we’re gadgets fanatics, and even rumors are enough to get us excited. We love leaks of all kinds, whether it’s images, specs, or concepts. We’ve gathered together a few of the weeks best rumored gadgets, including iOS devices, Android, and Windows Phone.

The Unnamed HTC Ice Cream Sandwich Device:

We’ve all heard by now of the HTC Ville, a quad core device running the latest Android version. Now we’ve got some shots of another mystery HTC handset running Ice Cream Sandwich. These images are from Phone Arena, and while we have no name for the device, we can glean a bit of info from the photos. Verizon is looking like a sure bet for this one, since the first image shows the Verizon 4G/LTE bootup screen. However, the device has not been branded in the photos. It does look similar to the DROID Incredible 2, so perhaps we’re seeing the Incredible 3? Specs are said to include a 1.2 GHz dual core Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera, VGA front camera, and an AMOLED display. Hit the source for more images.

The LG Miracle/Fantasy:

LG this week teased a 5″ device set at taking on Samsung’s Galaxy Note. However, a new leaked Windows Phone device has been making the rounds as well. This one is currently circulating as the LG Miracle, or possibly the Fantasy. GSM Arena dug up these photos of the device, which sports a 4″ display, 1GHz Scorpion CPU, 5MP rear camera, VGA front camera, and NFC capabilities. Check the source for more images.

LG Fantasy

LG Fantasy

The Samsung Galaxy Mini II:

Samsung’s Galaxy Mini is looking like it might have a new little brother in the Galaxy Mini II. Again, GSM Arena managed to lay hands on this photo of the tiny new device. Codenamed Jena, the Mini II is equipped with a 3.3″ HVGA display, 800MHz processor, 3GB of onboard storage, 3MP camera, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Hints of a mid-February release have been rumored, coinciding with Mobile World Congress.

The new Galaxy Mini II

The Pink Samsung Galaxy Note:

The acclaimed Smablet, Phablet, whatever you want to call it, the Galaxy Note has recently made its US debut after a period of European exclusivity. The near-tablet sized smartphone with an included stylus has proven a very popular attraction on AT&T, just as it was in Europe. Currently, it’s offered in carbon blue or ceramic white. However, GMS Arena has picked up a shot of an inventory screen that shows a new Valentine’s day deal for a pretty berry pink version of the device. It does not look like it will be making its way to the states, though, so UK readers take ‘Note’.

Pink Galaxy Note

The iPad 3 and 7″ iPad:

As March gets closer, new iPad rumors have been dominating the net. We recently wrote about some leaked parts for Apple’s next-gen tablet, which point toward a new display, new processor, and a larger battery. Unfortunately, it does not look like it will be a brand new design, but rather a small step up from the iPad 2. That should surprise no one, as Apple has a way of offering incremental upgrades more often than big, new redesigns. The expect release of the new tablet is currently rumored for March, but as with all things apple, that’s anyone’s guess. Rumors of a smaller iPad are also starting to surface again, though. Despite Steve Jobs’ anti-small-tablet attitude, analysts are still convinced that Apple is designing a 7″ iPad aimed at taking on the Kindle Fire. Current thinking places the iPad Mini launch at some time in the third quarter of this year.

AT&T’s new LTE network is getting some new devices over the coming months, with the introduction of HTC’s Titan II Windows Phone and more. HTC just broke cover with the Titan II on their Facebook page. This LTE Windows phone packs a jaw-dropping 16MP camera, and a 4.7″ display, further blurring the lines between smartphones and tablets. They’ve remained quiet on additional specs for the moment, as well as on pricing and availability. But AT&T has more surprises up their sleeve with some Samsung devices running Android.

Galaxy Note

Previous rumors about Samsung’s smartphone/tablet hybrid device, the Galaxy Note, have proven true. The Galaxy Note will make its US debut on AT&T’s LTE network. The AT&T version features hardware keys, but not much else has changed from its international counterpart. It will feature a 5.3″ Super AMOLED display, 1.5 GHz dual core processor, and the S Pen accessory. Availability should be in “the next few weeks”, though pricing details remain sketchy.

In an unexpected twist, AT&T will be offering a third Samsung Galaxy S II device to their already crowded lineup. After the first Galaxy S II launched on AT&T, a few weeks later saw the arrival of the SII Skyrocket for their LTE network. Now, the Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD will take its place as king of the pack. The S II HD will measure 9.27mm thick, feature a 1.5GHz dual core processor, and 4.65″ Super AMOLED display. That’s just slightly larger than its counterparts.

Samsung Exhilarate

Finally, on the more budget end, AT&T has announced the Samsung Exhilarate. The Exhilarate will cost $50 on a 2-year contract, and has an eco-friendly design composed of 80% recycled post-consumer materials. Other than that, not much else is known about this device just yet. You can read the full press release below.

- Owaeis N. contributed to this story

If you’re one of the millions of Android users concerned about Carrier IQ, we have some tips for checking your device for its presence, and removing it. But what is carrier IQ, and why should you be concerned? Let’s take a look.

What is Carrier IQ:

If you’ve read the internet the last couple of days, you’ve no doubt heard of Carrier IQ. Carrier IQ is a software designed to help service providers and device manufacturers identify and diagnose quality issues on your smartphone, such as battery life and dropped calls. The software collects data to analyze service and device quality, and transmits that data back to carriers and device makers.

The controversy over carrier IQ began when a 25-year old security researcher named Trevor Eckhart published some details of his research, showing how Carrier IQ can be easily tweaked to track and log information on iPhones, Android phones, and Blackberry phones. He described it as a keylogging rootkit that is hard to detect, hard to remove, and runs by default on many modern smartphones without the user’s knowledge. Aside from service-related issues, the software can also track a user’s location, app usage, web browsing, videos watched, read text messages, and even log keystrokes. The software runs on startup, and can be triggered to send data to carriers and manufacturers when certain conditions are met.

Sprint and AT&T have both admitted that their devices use Carrier IQ software, but that it is used only within the boundaries of their privacy statements, and only record quality and service-related data. They did not disclose which devices run the software, though. HTC and Samsung have also admitted that some of their devices come with the software installed, but only at the request of the carrier. Verizon, RIM, and Nokia have denied that any of their devices use the software. As we speak, Carrier IQ’s website claims to have their spying tool deployed on 141,361,600 handsets! Apple has also stated that some of their devices did use Carrier IQ, but iOS 5 stopped supporting it otherwise you could disable it easily from the settings app.

Why is Carrier IQ a threat to your privacy?

Each and every move of yours is being recorded and sent to the carrier and/or manufacturer of your phone without your knowledge which is not limited to crash reports, rather includes each and everything you type on your smartphone, your location, your browsing history – even if you delete it – and your text messages in plain text. If you’ve not jumped off your couch yet, let me make it clear that it is almost a fact that your carrier knows your gmail password, your credit card details, your wife’s email address and possibly the email addresses of your kids along with the relevant passwords (if they ever used your phone to check their email or have smartphones themselves), has access to your personal photos you took with your wife when you were on a trip to Hawaii, your facebook ID, your wife’s and possibly children’s facebook ID along with the passwords. On top of that they always know where you are and where you have been even when you don’t share your location on Google latitude, FourSquare, twitter or don’t even use maps!! Just blend it with all of your text messages and viola, anybody having access to this data – either it be govt, CIA, your carrier or a random guy at the carrier’s – knows about you more than your beloved parents, more than your kids, more than your wife, even more than your own self. To make the story a little more scary I recall Julian Assange’s statement in which he said a few months back:

“[Facebook is the] most appalling spying machine that has ever been invented”

“Facebook, Google, Yahoo, all these major U.S. organizations have built-in interfaces for US intelligence” (to track anybody without their knowledge!).

The story is more saucy than one would ever imagine as Sprint is known to have supplied your location information to cops 8 million times!

Checking for, and removing Carrier IQ on Android

If you simply want to check if your device is running Carrier IQ, there is a new app available to do that. Head to your market and download Voodoo Carrier IQ Detector. The app is still in beta, and thus is admittedly not completely accurate. However, it should give you some idea as to whether you are exposed to Carrier IQ or not. As for removing it, if it is present, read on.

Rootzwiki developer Krylon360 has been delving into the Carrier IQ problem for Android devices, and while doing some work on a new ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, he’s come across the location of Carrier IQ.

“While I was working on a new ROM, I found something that has been a heated discussion this past week. I was able to locate where CIQ is coded into the frameworks”.

Using the following method will require some work around, as well as editing of some files on your device. Any troubleshooting or questions about this method should be directed to the original thread, where the developer can answer your questions. gggadgets.com is not responsible for any damage you might cause to your device by choosing to undertake this method. We recommend you to read our publishing policy before proceeding.

What You’ll Need

APK Manager (Can be Googled)

Smali

BakSmali

7zip or Winzip

Windows: Notepad++ [OR] Linux: Bluefish Editor

Step-by-Step Guide

Pull the following files from your phone:

/system/framework/android.policy.jar
/system/framework/framework.jar
/system/framework/framework-res.apk

Once you have all the files and have downloaded installed the programs listed above, follow these steps:

Take framework-res.apk, and place it into the apkmanager/place-apks-here-for-modding/

Open up Script.bat

Choose Option 22 and then select the number for framework-res.apk

Choose option 9 to decompile.

Once decompiled navigate to /apkmanager/projects/framework-res.apk/ Open AndroidManifest.xml in either Notepad++ or BlueFish and scroll all the way to the bottom. You should see this:

Rootzwiki image

This is all of the CIQ references within the framework-res.apk file. Next we will move onto the Jar files.

Take the smali and backsmali files you downloaded (you might need to rename them to remove the version number. they should just be called “smali” and “baksmali”) and place them into your sdk/tools directory

Next, open the android.policy.jar file in 7zip or winzip, and move the classes.dex into your sdk/tools dir.

Open Terminal or the cmd prompt, and navigate to your sdk/tools dir.

Run the following command. To make it easier, you can change the directory name it is extracting to.

java -jar baksmali.jar -o AndroidPolicy/ classes.dex

This will extract the smali files.

You will then want to navigate to sdk\tools\AndroidPolicy\com\android\internal\policy\impl

What you are looking for are the following files:

IQHandlerThread.smali

IQHandlerThread$1.smali

IQHandlerThread$2.smali

IQHandlerThread$3.smali

They will look like this:

Rootzwiki Image

Next, we are going to extract framework.jar by doing the same thing we did for android.policy.jar, opening the jar in 7zip, moving it to sdk/tools folder, and running this command:

java -jar baksmali.jar -o Framework/ classes.dex

Then, you will want to navigate to this directory:

Framework\com\carrieriq\iqagent\service\receivers\

You will see this file:

Rootzwiki image

The developer notes:

Now, I haven’t fully tested yet, but it’s very possible you can remove all of the references I have just showed you. I will test that either tonight, or this weekend.

If you do decide to test by removing the refs, you will need to recompile everything after you have removed it.

This should remove any references to Carrier IQ on your device. Again, if you have any questions on any of these steps, they should be posted on the original thread. This way the people who actually created this method can help you directly.

PocketNow is at it again with a fresh look at the quad core tablet that was hinted at earlier this week, which should be coming to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona early next year. The HTC Quattro will be joining the HTC Edge and Ville as the first round of quad core devices from the high-end device maker. This 10.1″ Android slate packs a 1280×728 resolution, though what kind of display is still uncertain.

Other jaw-dropping specs include a Tegra 3 quad core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage (expandable via micro SD), Bluetooth 4.0, 5GHz wifi bands, and the usual array of sensors and gyroscope. The code-named device will allegedly continue to host HTC’s new partnership with Beats Audio, meaning you’ll get an exemplary listening experience, and hopefully a set of nice headphones to go with it. The rear camera is said to be a mere 2MP, but how often do we really use a 10″ tablet for photo shooting? The front camera is a 1.3MP video chatter that’s 720p capable.

In addition, the new tablet will benefit from updated HD services from HTC, such as HTC Watch. If it’s running Sense 3.5, users will also be treated to 5GB of free online storage from Dropbox! What’s not really been mentioned is if HTC will be adding the Scribe pen to this tablet, as they have with previous releases. Since that’s been one of their stand-out features differentiating them from the rest of the pack, it’s likely a safe bet. An early 2012 release is anticipated, with both wifi and 3G variants rumored.

What is curious about this device, and the HTC Edge, is the Tegra 3 chip itself. To-date, HTC has relied on Qualcomm to provide their processors, and we do know that Qualcomm has their own quad core chips in the making. Don’t be too surprised if these device launch with Qualcomm, rather than NVIDIA chips.

The next generation of mobile devices carrying NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad core processor are starting to take their share of the news cycle these days. With the Transformer Prime debuting as the world’s first quad core tablet, other companies are hopping on the bandwagon to compete for your cash with their own offerings. 3 big names in tech are slated to drop their own quad core tablets in the coming months, Lenovo, Acer and HTC.

Lenovo:

The first tablet we have is the Lenovo 10.1″ device, which has no name at present. This device was uncovered by Engadget, and will be coming with Ice Cream Sandwich. Other details include 2GB of RAM (about time!) 10.1″ display, Tegra 3 1.6GHz quad core processor. Other details, like price and availability, remain sketchy at this point. It is rumored that this device could launch before year’s end, though.

HTC:

HTC has had a couple of leaked devices in the news recently. 2 quad core smart phones, the Edge and Ville, have been making the rounds with some very impressive specs. Now industry watch site Digitimes has piped up with some info about a quad core tablet from HTC, that will be one of 3 devices to premiere at MWC in Barcelona. That event takes place in February. As for detailed specs, those remain under wraps.

Acer:

The company behind the Acer Iconia A500 and A100 are following up those mildly successful devices with quad core offerings of the same line. Accoring to NotebookItalia, Acer will reportedly launch the Iconia A510 and A511 early next year. Those devices will look much like the A500, with the same aluminum backs and sturdy build. The A510 will be the wifi version, while the A511 will feature a 3G connection.

Following up the news of HTC’s first Tegra 3 phone, the HTC Edge, comes another device leak out of HTC. This is another next-gen device packing the top-of-the-line specs which is said to be debuting at Mobile World Congress 2012. BGR reportedly got an exclusive look at this device, and if the specs we see hold true there’s some major techgasms coming next year. So what’s the deal?

The device is codenamed the HTC Ville, but as with most working names we’ll expect to see a new one at launch. It is said to be set for an April launch with Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.0. You’ll note the lack of capacative touch buttons on the device, which is a good indicator of it actually having ICS. It will feature a 4.3″ qHD Super AMOLED display, and is powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm series 4 Snapdragon quad core processor. On the back you’ll find HTC’s new favorite 8MP backside-illuminated camera with 1080p video capture support. It’s being said that it will not have NFC capability, but that’s a small price to pay. It also measured just 8mm thin, has HSPA+ connectivity, and a 1,650 mAh battery. Naturally, Beats audio will be onboard, as well.

The future is certainly looking bright for the smartphone, and with specs like these we just might be sleeping off the next month. Wake us in time for CES 2012, please.

ASUS new Transformer Prime will be making a big splash soon as the world’s first tablet to carry the quad core Tegra 3 processor, bringing performance for mobile devices into the next generation. But what about phones? We saw promises of quad core phones back at CES 2011, where NVIDIA disclosed that its Tegra 3 chips were already shipping to manufacturers for use in late 2011 or early 2012. Since then, the mobile market has moved to dual core chips as the standard for high-end phones.
Enter HTC’s Edge. The world’s first quad core superphone has been unearthed by PocketNow, who is accurate in about 99% of cases, and known for their ridiculously early scoops on devices. According to the report, the HTC Edge will pack some drool-worthy specs to go with that shiny new quad core. The 720p display will measure 4.7″, while the device itself will be about 10mm thin. Coupled with the 1.5GHz Tegra 3 is 1GB of RAM, and the 8MP camera is the same one found in the MyTouch 4G Slide. That’s a 28mm f/2.2 lens with backlit sensor. If you haven’t seen photos taken with the MT4GS camera, they’re extremely good. Further rounding out the package is 32GB of built-in storage, which is expandable with micro SD, bluetooth 4.0, Beats audio, HTC Sense 4.0, and (possibly) Ice Cream Sandwich.

In addition to all this extraordinary goodness are updates to HTC services like HTC Listen music store, HTC Read book store, and the HTC Play gaming hub. HTC Watch, already available on some HTC devices, will allegedly begin offering HD content, as well.

What’s oddest about all of this is that the device is NOT said to support LTE. It will reportedly have HSDPA connectivity topping out at 21Mbps. There could be carrier variants of the device that will support LTE, but details remain sketchy at this point. It should also be noted that the image seen has capacitive touch buttons, which seems very odd considering they aren’t needed in ICS. That raises a rumor flag here, but we’ll have to see. You can look for this device in late Q1 or early Q2 of 2012, and of course if more information comes out we’ll add it for you. So who is holding off on that upgrade for a few more months?

Since Ice Cream Sandwich was announced a few weeks ago, many smartphone makers have been busy assuring customers that that their device will see the latest OS in the coming months. HTC has been a little quiet on exactly which of their devices will be seeing some Ice Cream, but that changed this morning when they posted a statement on their Facebook page detailing which devices will be getting upgraded.

HTC knows how excited our fans are to get their hands on Google’s latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, so we’re thrilled today to announce the first wave of HTC phones that will receive upgrades: We can confirm the brand new HTC Vivid, on sale beginning today, is upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, Ice Cream Sandwich is coming in early 2012 to a variety of devices including the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL and HTC Sensation XE, as well as the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G through close integration with our carrier partners.

There will likely be others added to this list, but for now this is all they want to say. We’ll, of course, keep you updated as we move forward.
