HP’s touchpad was never able to appeal to the masses, but did break its own sales records after it was dropped to a $100 price. Although, most of those units were bought by developers and hobbyists. Who knew this would start a new era of hacking, development, and creativity? Soon after the TouchPad was sold out, we started to see a lot of mods and ports for HPs deceased tablet. There have been very interesting ones, like Meego, and the most popular one, Android! But this time around, a hacker has taken a rather unusual route and has ported Nemo Mobile to HP TouchPad. If you don’t know yet, Nemo is a Linux distribution for mobile devices powered and maintained by the MeeGo community, and has a UX based on Meego. It supports Nokia’s Qt cross-platform apps, which run on mobile, as well as desktop devices. Until today Nemo Mobile worked on Nokia devices N900, N950 and some x86 tablets and netbooks, so this is the first interesting development.

Here’s a demo of Nemo running on the HP TouchPad, and a Qt based game, Flying Bus on top of it.

The touch screen doesn’t work yet and the performance is laggy but it means a lot to.. well, may be nobody.

At first glance the Nokia N9 looks to be a pretty impressive piece of hardware, and it is. The 3.9-inch curved glass AMOLED screen lacking any front hardware buttons is certainly flashy. The NFC chip is ready to start making mobile payments. It’s powered by a 1 GHz TI OMAP processor, has an 8-megapixel rear camera (with a rumor that says it could be 12), and comes in 16GB and 64GB models. It also comes in Black, Cyan or Magenta. So the hardware’s on par with pretty much any high-end device out there right now. So what’s the trouble?

The real problem is MeeGo. MeeGo might have been a decent operating system at one time, but it’s certainly not gotten better with age. And with the dominance of Android and iOS, other mobile OS’s are really having a tough time of it. MeeGo is an all but dead OS, and Windows Phone 7 is going to become Nokia’s system of choice going forward. MeeGo doesn’t have the apps to really be a contender in the new mobile space, nor can it hope to match the dominance of Google, Apple, or even Microsoft. The move to another OS is a good one, and with the upcoming Mango version of Microsoft’s mobile OS, Windows Phone is about to get a bit better.

You could certainly do worse with a smartphone than the N9, but the fact is you could do a whole lot better. Only time will tell if Nokia’s move to WP7 is the right one, but packaging such a hardware-rich device with an all but dead OS is, in this writer’s opinion, not a great move.

We don’t talk much about Windows phones here. That’s mostly because, well, it’s Windows phone, and you can probably count the number of WP7 users on 1 hand. In all seriousness, though, the platform has been picking up speed lately.

With the introduction of the Mango update, WP7 got a heck of a social network overhaul. You can now carry a single conversation across text, email, Facebook, Windows Messenger and use group texting conversation tools. Your Twitter feeds are also more integrated into your contacts and messaging system, and you can link multiple e-mail inboxes to a single box for easier access and control over e-mail. Gotta say that’s a very nice feature for someone like me who uses at least 5 e-mail addresses.

The Mango update also improved app management, made them easier to search, and added better memory management for multitasking. Then they updated the browsing experience with IE9 and revamped the search features with Bing. And with Microsoft’s recent purchase of Skype, you can bet that future iterations of the platform will see native integration of that service as well.

Now, according to Reuters, Nokia is getting set to release 2 new WP7 devices with the preloaded Mango update. Leaks reveal that one device will be a touchscreen-only, while the second will feature a sliding keyboard design. In order to push devices out more quickly, Nokia is going to reuse a couple of their existing form factors from past Symbian devices, load them with WP7 and rush them to market. Rushed to market doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, but if you’re a hardcore Windows user and batty for the next WP7 device, then watch what Nokia is doing this year. The world’s largest handset manufacturer has made a commitment to the Windows Phone platform.

Here comes a huge development in favor of Windows Phone 7. Like it’s past Microsoft has succeeded in convincing a huge hardware manufacturer Nokia to shift to Windows Phone WHOLY! There would no longer be anything called Symbian shipping with Nokia Phones in future!

Nokia Windows Phone 7

Nokia CFO, Timo Ihamuotila, at Nokia’s Capital Markets Day showed the above slide. Got it? Nokia will be all about Windows Phone 7 with the passage of time. No more Symbian! All Nokia needs is time to convert all of their devices to Windows Phone. We are not at all sure if the existing devices will be getting Windows Phone upgrade or only the new devices will enjoy the Microsoft yum. Apparently the transition will be completed by 2012 so it seems like only new devices will be having Windows Phone 7 on board – you know how quickly Nokia brings out new devices, older ones die at their own.

This is the only considerable development by Nokia in far past – the only reason we are covering Nokia here. But well, transition to Windows Phone 7 is a smart move. We guess we will be covering more and more Nokia in coming future. But we still think Android could be a better option.

2010 has been huge regarding smartphone race. It has definitely made the things to feel like smartphones are taking over the world. I literally find my Android phone replacing my laptop as I hardly go out with my laptop now. Writing a post from HTC Desire while travelling might not seem a good idea for some of you but it’s usual for me. Well If your smartphone is not ideal for creating content, it definitely is great when it comes to consuming the information which most of us definitely do more than the former. Some of you would argue over tablets but those are not huge yet. I assume 2011 is going to be a tablet year but 2010 was definitely a smartphone year.

While Android rocks my world, you might be an iPhone fan. At several points we find a tie between iPhone and Android. Though Android already outsells iPhone, iPhone users seem more loyal. Well, this is all confusing. So we decided to ask you guys to decide which has been the best Smartphone of the year.

Vote below but don’t forget to leave a comment supporting your vote. We are going to have detailed post on the results of this poll. Go ahead!

Nokia N8 has been making appearances for quite a while now but the software doesnot seems complete yet. It has to support Symbian^3 operating system which will make its debut later this year.
Nokia N8 doesn’t have major software improvements over the previous phones like N97 and X6. The only big difference is the multiple home screens. From the video below, you’d find that there’s no animation while switching between the screens. It looks pretty much dumb.

Nokia N8 is a 12MP Symbian^3 phone with a multitouch capable screen. You can pinch to zoom in the browser. It can record HD videos which are pretty cool. Nokia N8 can also be connected to an HDTV for HD video output through an HDMI port. The camera accompanies a Zenon flash for dim light conditions. Interestingly, Nokia N8 has got some great sound features too. It is world’s first phone to support Dolby Digital Plus. Imressive, isn’t it?

Nokia N8 will hit the European markets later this year at EUR 370 in different colors. No word on US release for now.

MeeGo is an open source project backed by the Linux Foundation. It is aimed at saving apparently two failed Linux projects – Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo. It combines both of them and tries to bring them in one package. There has been some work going on it for quite a while now. It has been made to run on Nokia N900 successfully.

Here’s a video demo of MeeGo running on Nokia N900. Have a look:

We can expect more devices in the near future. Let’s see when it starts shipping pre-installed on phones. Who will be the MeeGo pioneer by the way? I guess Nokia, since Intel doesn’t have phones for now and HTC good with Android and Windows Mobile.

Remember we told you about Nokia using Apple’s name in false advertising? Nokia was running an Adwords campaign that was misleading our readers by showing a heading “Apple Phone” and then leading them to Nokia’s site. Here’s our original post:

Nokia Using Apple’s Name In False Advertising To Attract Customers

After more than two weeks we have been officially contacted by Nokia. In an email to me, just moments ago, Arto Joensuu, Head of Digital Marketing, Nokia Middle East & Africa says:

Hi Owaeis

I saw your recent post about Nokia using Apple’s name in false advertising. http://gggadgets.com/technology-news/nokia-using-apples-name-in-false-advertising-to-attract-customers/

You make a very valid claim and I want to state that this is by no means a practice that we embrace or accept at Nokia. We were just as surprised to see this and it got us looking into the root of the cause immediately. The URL as well as the copy you referred to in your example are not the standard ones we use in our ongoing campaigns. After digging deeper we found out that the incident was caused by a technical glitch that had gone unnoticed by our media partner. We have contacted the responsible parties and taken the needed corrective actions.

I want to thank you for bringing up the topic and I hope this clarifies the situation.

Sincerely,

Arto Joensuu

Head of Digital Marketing, MEA

Nokia Middle East & Africa

Wow nice. I won’t comment on the ‘technical glitch’ but I am glad that Nokia admires it’s fault have most probably removed those ads from it’s campaign. Back to work Nokia!

You see a lot of Apple related stuff on ‘gggadgets.com’ and all other tech and gadget blogs. People write about all the great products Apple has. But you’d hardly find main stream tech bloggers writing about Nokia. So they don’t get much of free advertising benefit that Apple does by making great products. A lot of audience lies on these sites and around the whole internet. Adsense is the main player in internet advertising and we know Nokia uses it a lot for advertising across the web. What we didn’t know is Nokia is too much scared of Apple’s success and decided to catch people’s interest in Apple’s products. Nokia is running an advertising campaign on Adwords that is solely misleading and fraud.

I am not sure how many fraudlent Nokia ads are running on Adwords but I can tell you of what I just saw on a recent post on ‘the gadgets‘. Guess what? You won’t beleive! Nokia is using “Apple Phone” as the ad heading to advertise its own phones. Lo and behold! Is there any Nokia phone called ‘Apple Phone’??? Or even looks like an Apple?

Here’s a screenshot of the ad:

Nokia False Ads on 'gggadgets.com' - Click on image to enlarge

Look at the URL at the bottom of the ad! It is the official Nokia site link! When I clicked on the ad, I landed on Nokia’s official website for Middle East and Africa. There was nothing like Apple there. Nokia is using our readers interest in Apple products and drive them to their own site hoping readers to get deceived and order a Nokia device instead of an iPhone. Hell no, our readers are smart enough to not get deceived by false advertising.
